The Scoop

Ok, the frame is coming together nicely, but the case is going to have to look good on the outside too! So, I started working on the top piece of my case. I had the idea of a custom created, one off hood scoop that would act as a cover for the blow hole. In my mind I had a bit more of a 'svelt' scoop envisioned than the one I ended up with... but it is all good! First part of any of my custom work, is the paper mock up to make sure my plans are not out of line. So, I created a paper mockup of the scoop, and how I wanted it to work (physically) initially.

I then unfolded the paper and used it as a template for a bending brake station that I had built a few days earlier to take sheet aluminium and bend it.

While performing this point I figured out where I could put an 80mm blow hole fan by putting the top on the case, installing the power supply and a CD/Optical drive, gauging the middle area, and placing the fan in the space so that it fit best. I then outlined the fan in permanent marker marked the center and then brought out the hole saw. I put the bit into the drill press and went to town. With the blow hole created in the perfect spot, I now have a spot to gauge the scoop.

I have a hard time staying on only one task, and this mod prooved it. I unbolted the mosfet fan on the back next to the ports. The UV transparent Green would look awesome on another mod, but not a tribute to a late 60's muscle car! I then sprayed the fan housing down with several layers of gloss black after sanding the surface for a little bit of paint traction. It is a little detail that actually added a lot to the inside by removing a glaring odd color from the CPU area.
